  21. Hi Mary.  I hope this info is helpful.  Cued Speech is not a form
  22. of Sign Language.  It is an aid to speech-reading.

  24. As only about one third of the speech sounds in Engilsh are
  25. recognizable on the lips, i.e. - the initial consonants in mat, bat
  26. and pat all appear the same to a person speechreading; a system was
  27. developed using hand shapes anchored on the nasal area, throat area
  28. and mouth area that would allow the "m", "b" and "p" to recognized
  29. by a speechreader who knew how to cue.
