- FRANCE
- The French government has announced that it is cancelling all
- further contracts to take Australian toxic waste for incineration.
-
- The announcement came after a shipment of PCB's was successfully
- unloaded in France, amid angry protest by members of the
- environmental group Greenpeace.
-
- An earlier attempt to unload the waste in France were blocked by
- Greenpeace supporters and the ships were also turned away from
- ports in Brussels and Britain.
-
- After being turned away from Belgium, the containers of Australian
- PCB's were finally unloaded in France, after Greenpeace supporters
- held up the cargo for two hours. Eighteen Greenpeace activists were
- arrested.
-
- The French Environment Minister has since announced France will
- break the contract with Australia and will not take any more waste,
- although it had agreed to accept up to 1,000 tons of PCB's for
- incineration. He said Australia must develop its own waste disposal
- facilities.
-
- Greenpeace welcomed the French decision as an immense victory for
- public opinion. (R. Australia 9/6)
