  21. Since the Red Cross relief information was posted here, a relief
  22. effort specific to the Miccosukee Tribe which our nativenet
  23. members may be interested in helping through is as follows:

  29. Electric power to the reservation may not be restored for many weeks.
  30. The U.S. military has provided two 30 KWh diesel generators for the
  31. duration, one of the few times that the tribe has ever accepted
  32. outside help. As you may know, the Miccosukee tribe was never
  33. defeated by the U.S. military after withdrawing to the Everglades
  34. after the "Trail of Tears" atrocities, and has remained fiercely
  35. independent. But with the unprecedented devastation of the storm,
  36. they have been unable to cope alone. During the hurricane, the tribal
  37. government buildings were opened to non-natives as a designated
  38. hurricane shelter.

  40. The Miccosukee reservation is 20 miles west of Miami, along Tamiami
  41. Trail between Miami and Fort Myers in the Everglades.
