- Do you really need 2MB of EMS? This is 2MB that can't be used for XMS
- (and thus can't be used by Windows and SmartDrive). What are you
- running that needs EMS?
-
- >DEVICEHIGH=D:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE 512 256

- Not a very big cache (512K). Evan smaller when Windows starts to run
- low on memeory (256K). Try increasing both numbers to to 1024 or even
- 2048 if what you do is very disk-intensive. It's a tradeoff.
-
- A general point: SmartDrive is not a very good cache, relatively
- speaking. A plug here is overdue for Hyperware's HyperDisk
- (RR#1 Box 91, Pall Mall TN 38577 USA 1-615-864-6868). High quality
- shareware (so try before you buy) at a very realistic price. And sh*t
- fast, compared with SmartDrive. Some folks have spoken about
- Super-PC-Kwik in similar terms (I've not tried it). I have, however,
- tried Norton's cache and didn't find it better than SmartDrive. Your
- mileage may vary.

-
- MS recommend 50 or 60 files these days. This isn't going to effect your
- speed, but tends to help stability (!).
-
- >SHELL=E:\DOS\COMMAND.COM E:\DOS\ /E:200 /P
-
- MS recommends /E:512 as a minimum. Again, this isn't going to effect
- your speed.
-
-
- Hope this helps,

- richi.
