- We run a SLIP connection to the Internet on an occasional basis.
- We've recently noticed a problem with sendmail when the SLIP
- connection is up. What we find is that email meant for a host
- on our local network is getting sent out over the SLIP connection,
- instead. When SLIP is not up, the mail works fine. But when it's
- up, we can lose mail (it never comes back).
-
- The problem seems to be tied to name service, in some way. If
- I send email to a local host, using its IP address, it gets there.
- But if I use the hostname (short version or fully qualified), the
- mail dissappears.
-
- We're not running a local name server. When SLIP is up, a machine on
- the Internet provides name service; when SLIP is down, we use
- /etc/hosts.
-
- We know the mail's going out the SLIP line because we saw it while we
- were monitoring that line during testing of a new configuration. We
- saw the mail header and body go by. We're not certain where it was
- headed.
-
- All other network services (ping, ftp, telnet) seem to work fine while
- SLIP is up. And sendmail works fine with the LAN.
-
- Any ideas out there? I know there's a lot more testing I can do, but
- I wanted to ask if this is a known problem, first.
