- FR>· Subject: Laser Optics wiring
-
- FR>We plan to install an ODT system that will be connected to several remote
- FR>buildings either to other ODT boxes, PCs or terminals. Could be either serial
- FR>or ethernet.
-
- FR>This is in Florida lightening country and previous installations in the area
- FR>have always resulted in painful lessons about surges, blowouts etc.
-
- FR>Has anybody learned to over come this problem with fiberoptics cabling?
- FR>Products? Sources? Can this be done by an inexperienced installer (as far as
- FR>fiber is concerned) We would really like to have some kind of a mux box that
- FR>would be connected via one fiber cable but have several more common serial or
- FR>ethernet lines at each end.
-
- FR>Any and all suggestions and recommendations would be appreciated.

- Fred-
- I found Allied Telesys (look for their ads in the trade rags) to be very
- helpful when i was in a similar situation. I am doing a multibuilding
- mining operation in Virginia with LanTastic. It has been strongly
- recommended that I hire a fiber contractor, and after seeing that the
- tools to install the connectors can cost $1500, I agree. I was
- surprised that the overall cost was not too bad - sure cheaper then all
- the ground loop blowouts and lightning downtime you'd get otherwise.
- BTW, we also found a nice Infrared link for distances up to 1000 meters
- (I think). I can't remember the name but EMAil me if you need it - it
- is $4500 per end, which may be too much!
