  13. I had my slip connection working once, but now it does not work.
  14. I do not know what I changed, but I have tried to work through every
  15. permutation of the steps involved and can not get things to work.

  17. What I do:
  18.  
  19. o I have added entries for "myhost" and "server" in /etc/hosts.
  20.  
  21. o I dial the server, login, see the slip server start.
  22.  
  23. o I run the "slattach /dev/tty0 myhost server 19200" command.
  24.   It starts correctly and shows the right response.

  26. o I run the "ifconfig sl0 netmask 0xffffff00" command, which seems to run
  27.   fine.

  29. o I run the "route add default server 2" to route stuff out the
  30.   slip connection.

  32. The "netstat -r" command seems to show the proper things (from memory):

  34.     loop        loop        UH         lo0
  35.     myhost      loop        UH         lo0
  36.     server      myhost      UH         sl0
  37.     default     server      UG         sl0
  38.  
  39. The problem:
  40.  
  41. pings to any host beyond "myhost" (e.g. server, hosts on server's net,
  42. other hosts) return "Host is unreachable". pings to "myhost" or "loop"
  43. work fine.

  45. Further, when slip *was* working, I would get errors for hosts that
  46. didn't exist or had no route, but at least the modem lights (SD RD)
  47. would show data exchanges.

  49. Now, the modem is never hit!! It is like something local (routed?) is
  50. deciding the host is unreachable and not even considering the route
  51. for "default" through "sl0" via "server".

  53. Anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this problem.

  55. Do I need a "/etc/gateways" file? If so, what should it look like?
