- I recently upgraded a couple of machines to SunOS 4.1.3. I then
- noticed that the initial login prompt was all goofed up: characters
- were not printed correctly and CR/LF didn't work properly.
-
- The problem is that getty is now 8 bit clean. Since getty was
- changed to be 8 bit clean, a new entry for the console, cons8, has
- been added to /etc/gettytab. A corresponding entry in the /etc/ttytab
- file references the new cons8 in /etc/gettytab for the console.
-
- Why this was a problem: we modified /etc/ttytab to remove all
- "secure" login ports and we modified /etc/gettytab to clear the
- screen before the login prompt (some uncouth students were leaving
- offensive material on the screens when they logged out.) So,
- during the upgrade, we did not replace the /etc/ttytab and gettytab
- with the 4.1.3 versions.
-
- Words of advice: double check your /etc/ttytab and /etc/gettytab
- after the 4.1.3 upgrade.
