- | (i.e. 486 motherboards, ViewSonic 7 screens, SoundBlaster Pro audio cards,
- | etc) I REALLY appreciate how elegant and fast my Indigos are for multimedia.
- |
- | However, the CDROM market for MAC/PC machines is SOOOO MUCH BIGGER
- | than that for SGI (I know, this is an old story). What I want is to
- | be able to RUN (not just read) these CDROMS's on my Indigo (e.g.
- | Microsoft Bookshelf, Oxford Dictionary, etc.). Is there any hope that at
- | some future date that this might be possible? I know that SGI has licensed
-
- Maybe. There are several companies working on Mac emulators (not just
- conversion packages), and at least one of them is supposed to run on
- the SGI systems with pretty decent performance. Whether that emulator
- supports all the Mac peripherals, including CD-ROM, I just don't know.
-
- | "QuickTime" from Apple. Does this mean that I might be able to use Macintosh
- | CDROMS someday? I know we're talking about more than just reading the
-
- QuickTime and CD-ROM really have nothing to do with each other. Yes,
- after we have QT players, etc., you should be able to view Mac files
- once you get them on the system, but how easy that is depends on the
- way they are delivered. If in ISO9660 format on a CD, it should be
- no problem. If they are in an Apple specific format, it would be
- harder. As I recall, many/most Mac CD's are in ISO 9660 format these
- days, for what that is worth.
-
- | CDROM, but also converting the sound/video information to a SGI-compatible
- | formats. Will SGI's recent deal with Avid Technologies help in this regard?
-
- I'm not familiar with that one, perhaps one of the digital media folks
- can comment further.
