- My organization is currently moving from a IBM mainframe to
- workstations and I have been elected to define our groups
- software/hardware requirements. One of my goals is to provide
- the users with a homogenous user environment. The current plan
- is for 50% SGI machines and 50% X terminals. Many reader may feel
- that the WorkSpace is cumbersome and slow. But new user
- find it very comforting and it does ease the transition
- to unix.
-
- Image my surprise when I found out that the WorkSpace
- will not work on X terminals. My question is:
- Does SGI have any plans to provide a version which will
- run on a X terminal? If so, when? How about adding more
- capability to the application along the lines of Hewlett
- Packard's HPVue which works on all terminals that support X.
- Compare the jot program to the editor that is supplied with
- HPVue. Jot is a joke!!!! (Zip is much better) If my users
- see a HP workstation, they will refuse to work on an SGI machine.
- My understanding is that most SGI users are "power unix users"
- who have no need for a GUI. Well if SGI want to expand its
- market share it must address the useability issue.
- (Other vendors are!) You can at least offer it. Users can decide
- for themselves if they want to use it. If gl is so important
- to SGI, why don't they sell a X/gl terminal?
-
- Comment: I realize that most application written using gl run
- much faster than a X-based counterpart. I am not a big fan
- of X but it has become a standard and does offer the benefit of
- portability. Maybe OpenGL will catch on and X11R6 will have a
- gl extension. Lets hope so.
-
-
- Any recommendations for a replacement for the WorkSpace on X Terminals?
