- We use a CD-ROM database that, because of its data format (weirdly
- compressed, and I'm not a cryptographer) can only be used with the
- DOS software it comes with. (SoftPC won't handle this situation.)
- In the past, we'd kept a PC in a corner of the office just for this
- database, but we wanted to change things so users could access the
- data from their own NeXTs at their desks.
-
- Our solution -- which worked, hence this posting -- was to get OS/2
- and its NFS-TCP/IP add-on and a ethernet card for the PC. Since
- IBM's OS/2 can emulate both DOS and Windows, as well as running in
- normal mode as a real operating system, this had turned out to be
- an inexpensive and robust solution to our problem. I suspect it
- may be a reasonable way of dealing with lots of other situations as
- well, and most of us have a suitable machine sitting around or can
- acquire one at little cost.
