- In some ways it was a question of Microsoft buying out. Dave Cutler, one
- of the chief architects of VMS, left DEC to go to Microsoft and (co?)architect
- Windows NT. Some of the mistakes embedded in VMS were eliminated (the
- joys of having a relatively clean sheet) and many modern features were
- added. Paralleling VMS, it has asynchronous IO, symmetric multiprocessing,
- layered device drivers, and threads. Modern additions include the
- notion of a microkernel with personality modules, the internet protocols,
- OSF compliant RPC, and a log based file system. I would expect that they
- hired quite a few other high level architects/engineers (didnt NeXTworld
- have an article about one of the lead MACH designers getting a major offer?)
- so Windows NT should be grown from experience instead of experimentation.

- Taking things a COMPLETELY different direction, does anyone know if DG
- will ever run NS on their boxes? I recall something about 4 88100 class
- chips in a box. It wouldnt give the rumored NeXT dual 88110 machine a run for
- its money, but for the power hungry (and the marketing hype of having a
- true multiprocessing NeXTstep system shipping) it might make a good interim
- product.
-
- Also, has anyone had a chance to play with the 3Dkit? Can it do anything
- in realtime on the 68040 (with or without the ND card) or does one really
- have to wait for the NRW?
