- Steve,
- One of the differences between an environment like the NeXT and the old
- GUIs like Mac and Windows is that more of the "desktop" does NOT go away
- when you launch an application (or two, or three). For example, as I
- compose this posting, I can double-click any word and look it up in
- Digital Webster, Oxford Quotations, or the Digital Librarian, all with a
- quick keystroke or mouseclick or two. Or if we're talking math I can type
- something like Factor[1-c^4], click "Evaluate to Plain Text" in the
- Services menu, and get (1 - c)*(1 + c)*(1 + c^2). Applications are
- automatically launched as needed to perform these services. Also, many of
- the menu items activate objects common to many apps, like the FontPanel,
- ColorPanel, PrintPanel, etc.. The Mac made a beginning at the kind of
- integration now found in NeXT, but the NeXT is currently more like a real
- desktop than the Mac.
