- If anyone is interested, here are promised (summarized) features of the
- upcoming Windows NT:
-
- -Full compatibility with MS-DOS and Windows applications on both Intel
- and MIPS based systems
-
- -Interface almost identical to Windows 3.1
-
- -Support for OS/2 server and POSIX-compliant applications
-
- -32 bit architecture/32 bit flat memory model
-
- -Multiple threads of execution/Preemptive Multitasking
-
- -Symmetric multiprocessing support (more CPU's in PC, more power)
-
- -Runs on multiple platforms (Intel 386 and higher, MIPS R3000 & R4000)
-
- -Built in file sharing and print sharing capabilities
-
- -Support for development of distributed applications/interprocess
- communication
-
- -Ability to set up and manage networks/systems with the seperate licensing
- of the Microsoft LAN Manager (extra cost, sort of like Appleshare 3.0)
-
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS (Copied directly from Microsoft Flyer)
-
- "The Microsoft Windows NT operating system runs on Intel 80386 and
- higher systems with a recommended configuration of 8 MB of RAM and
- 100 MB or more of disk space, or on similaraly configured RISC-based
- systems."
-
- Kinda reminds me of Unix, does it not? (it could be just me, I don't
- know) Not the sort of stuff your average PC owner (read _not_ power
- user/programmer) would be able to run realistically and practically on
- his or her machine without significant upgrade and cost. I think I'd be
- safe also to assume that one would need at least 486/33 and 8 MB of RAM
- to do really be able to do anything in this OS. I'd go as far to
- predict that taking advantage of all the capabilities of NT on a 386
- would be like running Windows on an XT or 286 and running System 7 on a
- Mac Plus or Classic.
