- No flames. I agree with you entirely. But as a Mac user who uses a PC at
- work for publishing duties, let me point out one of those precious few
- instances where you can do it better on a Mac than a PC (but not because of
- any inherent limitations on the part of the PC).
-
- Generally we limit our PC PageMaker 4.0 output to our LaserWriter IINT, but
- sometimes we send stuff off to the local service bureau. Unfortunately, high
- characters--em dashes, bullets, etc.--don't translate from the PC to the Mac
- properly. Em dashes come out as ellipses when opening PC PM4 file from Mac PM
- for example. And no matter how much I try to tell this service bureau, they
- won't pay attention and make sure that such characters come out properly.
-
- I only mention this because I was burned yet again yesterday. This service
- bureau, despite being outfitted with PCs and PM4 for them, for some reason
- won't open .PM4 files on their PCs. (I told you it had nothing to do with any
- inherent limitations of the PC--it's just some sort of bigotry on the part of
- the service bureau.) They insist on opening PM files on the Mac, and no
- matter how well I've circled what I know are the problem characters (_always_
- send a proof with your jobs), sometimes they still goof it up. In instances
- like these, it's just plain better to use a Mac if at all possible. Using a
- PC for publishing jobs that are ultimately going to a service bureau is just
- asking for trouble. Geez, they can't unzip my .zip files, they can't get my
- PostScript files to download, blah, blah, blah....
-
- (As for why we're doing publishing work on a PC and not a Mac, that's another
- story entirely; the short story is that IBM's FUD factor runs very high with
- my boss, especially after he got severly burned by Digital with a Decmate II.
- After that, even Apple Macintosh computers he considered to be too "non
- standard." sheesh. you can't tell a lawyer anything.)

-
- PS: I'm looking for people qualified and willing to speak to service bureau
- customers on the topic of how properly to deal with/how to get the most for
- your money out of your service bureau. Call me at 800-633-0055 if you're
- interested in discussing this.
