-
- The ST Book does actually exist. I've seen it for sale. It just suffers
- from the unfortunate problem of costing twice as much as a Powerbook 100 4/40
- for a machine with 1MB of RAM, 20MB hard disk and no floppy drive. It looks
- ugly too.
-
- But Atari's problem isn't their hardware; it's their software. I mean, there
- are still unfixed bugs in TOS which they've known about since 1985. It took
- them years to produce any sort of OS upgrade at all (TOS 1.4), and then it
- took another year before existing ST owners could buy it.
-
- It continues. My younger brothers still have STs, so I still follow what's
- happening in the Atari world. Currently the big vapourware product is
- FSM-GDOS, the ST's answer to TrueType or ATM. But of course, because Atari
- never bothered with little things like actually making GDOS available or
- documenting how to use it, none of the popular software out there works with
- FSM-GDOS, even assuming you can find a copy (which so far I haven't been able
- to do.)
-
- I kept waiting for Atari to release decent OS. I even tried MINIX, which was
- at least an improvement on TOS. Early this year I gave up, sold all my ST
- stuff and bought a Mac.
-
- Now the Falcon is coming out. Reasonable hardware, but where's the operating
- system? 8.3 letter filenames? You must be kidding.
