- I recently bought a used external hard disk for my Mac Plus and it
- seems to have died on me. A few days ago when I turned on my machine
- it just gave me the question mark. So here are the things I've done
- so far...
-
- I put it on my Mac IIci at work so I could try to diagnose the problem
- (by the way it worked on this machine before too.) My drive was
- formatted with Silverling 5.31 and when I first tried running
- Silverlining it took forever to scan the SCSI bus but eventually came
- up with some device at ID 4 (the address of my external drive). It
- first said that it could not access the drive reliably. So I left the
- drive running for several hours, thinking that maybe the humidity in
- my basement apartment had something to do with it. Several hours
- later I tried the same thing and it found the device quickly with no
- problems. I can't remember exactly where it balked this time, but I
- decided to leave it for a while again.
-
- When I tried again to mount it with Silverlining I got the following
- behavior which is pretty much the current state of things. I start
- Silverlining and it finds a "ZFP 40" at ID 4 as it should. I select
- it and it comes up with the dialog showing the name and size of the
- partitions, etc. I select mount and then hit Update and I get a
- message from the finder that the volume cannot be used because of an
- error of type -127 (whatever that is).
-
- So I decide to run the tests in Silverlining. Here I get inconsistent
- behavior. The consistent thing is that *somewhere* in the test it
- gets stuck. Yeah, it stops and just sits there forever ... I have to
- reboot. Sometimes it makes it through all of the short tests with no
- problems, sometimes it gets stuck in the seek tests, and it always
- gets stuck in the long tests but not always the same place.
-
- I have a feeling this is a pretty serious problem, but can anybody
- tell me what it is, and is it fixable? Please tell me that I won't
- have to buy a new drive. I'm a poor grad student who finally broke
- down and bought a *used* 40MB drive to make his Mac Plus useable ... I
- really can't afford buy another one.
-
- By the way, it's a SONY drive in a CMS external case.
