- : Howdy,

- : both as a modem and fax at 14400 baud. I was wondering if anybody had
- : something that will allow me to do work across a modem at more than 2400
- : (ACK!) baud and still allow me FAX access since I'm looking into
- : starting my own business. I'm assuming that the modem will automatically
- : connect at 9600 baud which is the speed I can call school at. This way I
- : don't have to wait for all those full-page screen refreshes :)
-
- I have a Supra Fax Modem and it connects at the speed you tell it to,
- if possible. It will "negotiate" a connection, dropping down in speed
- from the intial selection. For example, I usually set mine at 57,600
- and let it connect at 14,400 or 9600 or whatever.
-
- : As for the fax part of it...I'm 100% ignorant. I know NOTHING

- : can be 'interpreted' by someone who knows what I'm talking about. First
- : off, I'm guessing that faxes are sent (and received?) as some sort of
- : PICT-type file which is read in and printed as such. With the tiny
- : amount I know about faxes, I'd guess that they con't transmit characters
- : as TEXT, but rather a picture of text. This would lead to the question:
- : How does one send a fax of a Word document???? A GIF???? Having a fax
- : attatched to a computer to RECEIVE makes lots of sense, but as for
- : transmitting, I'm a bit at a loss for figuring out how the modem
- : software can take something like a Microsoft Word document and send it
- : without the document being printed first. I'm FAR from computer stupid
- : (geez, I program SGIs), but this is throwing me off. In any case, if you
- : have any raves or flames about this modem, or suggestions on any others
- : like the Hayes, please e-mail me. Thanx.
-
- The fax part acts just like a printer. By selecting the modem instead
- of your printer (in the Chooser), and by having suitable fax s/w (like
- the FaxSTf supplied with Supras), any application that can print can
- send faxes....word processors, graphics programs, etc.
-
- Think of the modem/fax as justa special kind of printer and you'll see
- why it works.
