- Howdy,
- A friend recently opointed out the SupraFax modem which runs
- both as a modem and fax at 14400 baud. I was wondering if anybody had
- problems with this before I drop $300+ on it. I'm really looking for
- something that will allow me to do work across a modem at more than 2400
- (ACK!) baud and still allow me FAX access since I'm looking into
- starting my own business. I'm assuming that the modem will automatically
- connect at 9600 baud which is the speed I can call school at. This way I
- don't have to wait for all those full-page screen refreshes :)
- As for the fax part of it...I'm 100% ignorant. I know NOTHING
- about faxes so I'm going to throw some things out here that hopefully
- can be 'interpreted' by someone who knows what I'm talking about. First
- off, I'm guessing that faxes are sent (and received?) as some sort of
- PICT-type file which is read in and printed as such. With the tiny
- amount I know about faxes, I'd guess that they con't transmit characters
- as TEXT, but rather a picture of text. This would lead to the question:
- How does one send a fax of a Word document???? A GIF???? Having a fax
- attatched to a computer to RECEIVE makes lots of sense, but as for
- transmitting, I'm a bit at a loss for figuring out how the modem
- software can take something like a Microsoft Word document and send it
- without the document being printed first. I'm FAR from computer stupid
- (geez, I program SGIs), but this is throwing me off. In any case, if you
- have any raves or flames about this modem, or suggestions on any others
- like the Hayes, please e-mail me. Thanx.
