- Thanx to all who responded to my questions about these two printers. I
- even contacted Epson for some info. Here is a brief summary...
-
- The AP3250 is designed for home/home office uses. If you use cut sheet
- paper exclusively or are tight on space, this is a good choice. One user
- indicated that some care had to be made on inserting paper into the 50
- sheet bin or it would tend to jam. A tractor feed is an extra cost item.
- Also Epson sells a rack for mounting this printer to the side of a desk.
- Based on Epson's literature, I am assuming this printer is quieter than the
- LQ-570
-
- The LQ-570 (also sold by Epson as the AP5000) is about 20% faster than the
- AP3250 and is primarily for continuous feed paper, although single sheets
- and envelopes can be printed without removing the continuous feed paper
- provided the printer is used with the tractor in push mode rather than pull
- mode. A cut sheet feeder is an expensive option. Epson recommends this
- printer for small to medium businesses. It also recommends this printer
- over the AP3250 if a good portion of the output will be graphics (although
- both have 360X360 graphics modes). The LQ-570 also has several more
- non-scalable fonts built-in.
-
- The street price of each printer is nearly the same if the optional tractor
- is purchased for the AP3250. (the list price for the LQ-570 is $499 and
- $299 for the AP3250 without the optional tractor)
-
- No one who sent me a message appears to be using the two scalable fonts
- built into both printers. The reasons were: no need with the available
- non-scalable fonts, software didn't support the scalable fonts (should
- change with future software), or user had Windows 3.1 and used TrueType
- which output in graphics mode.
