- Gateway has done very well in PC Mag's polls and what not, but my experience
- with Gateway has been such that I will never buy anything from them again.
-
- In one year, they have had to replace two monitors, a video card, and a
- power supply. Many conversations with their tech support people cannot
- identify anything that I have done to cause this.
-
- They have been very slow to fix these problems. I have waited as much as
- six weeks for replacement parts. Out of this first year, the computer has
- been down about three or four months. I am in Australia, but less than
- a third of the down time has been taken up with parts in transit. Most of
- the down time has just been waiting for Gateway to find the parts to ship
- and get their act together to ship the parts. When they do ship things,
- they usually send them to the wrong city, despite begging them to get it
- right for a change.
-
- It is common for Gateway to fail to return my calls.
-
- One last problem that relates to their software orders. I ordered their
- Win 3.1 upgrade in late April. I asked them to send it to me in Oz. When
- they still had not shipped it by mid-July, I asked them to send it to an
- address in the US while my wife visited relatives. They said "no problem, and
- we will ship right away." When it came time for her to return, it still was
- not there so she called. They left her on hold for about a half an hour, then
- told her that whoever told her they could ship the upgrade by then had been
- wrong. In the end, I received software I ordered in April in late August.
- Even then, one more time, they sent it to the wrong city and it took the
- usual extra week to straighten out that mess.
-
- Maybe I have just had very bad luck, but if you do not like to have a
- useless computer for long periods of time and if you do not like to wait
- several months longer than other people for upgrades, then Gateway might
- not be the place to spend your money.
