  12. A few weeks ago I asked about adding a 3.5-inch disc drive to my
  13. mother's 286-based computer.  I thought people might be interested
  14. in what she eventually did.

  16. She took the computer to the local computer shop and the staff there
  17. added a new external disc drive and fitted a new cable.  The new
  18. drive is a 1.44MB model and it works but the version of MS-DOS 
  19. (3.20) she uses can't manage 1.44MB floppy discs, only 720KB ones.
  20. The external drive is the B: drive so the cable has to come out of
  21. the case and then go back in the case to the A: drive.

  23. The only problem seems to be that the old internal A: drive sometimes doesn't
  24. report that the disc in it has been changed.  We told MS-DOS using
  25. DRIVPARM in CONFIG.SYS that the drive doesn't have a change line
  26. and the problem has gone away.  I think this is due to the cable being
  27. so long.
