- A few weeks ago I asked about adding a 3.5-inch disc drive to my
- mother's 286-based computer. I thought people might be interested
- in what she eventually did.
-
- She took the computer to the local computer shop and the staff there
- added a new external disc drive and fitted a new cable. The new
- drive is a 1.44MB model and it works but the version of MS-DOS
- (3.20) she uses can't manage 1.44MB floppy discs, only 720KB ones.
- The external drive is the B: drive so the cable has to come out of
- the case and then go back in the case to the A: drive.
-
- The only problem seems to be that the old internal A: drive sometimes doesn't
- report that the disc in it has been changed. We told MS-DOS using
- DRIVPARM in CONFIG.SYS that the drive doesn't have a change line
- and the problem has gone away. I think this is due to the cable being
- so long.
