- Ok, I have a question, with some very difficult situations to deal with.
-
- Currently, I have a Seagate ST1239A 200 Meg HD. It really blows.
- I am getting a transfer rate of 140K/sec on my 486-33.
- It is not the motherboard, it is not the I/O board, it is the HD.
-
- I have tried two of these drives, with the same result.
- I tried one in a 386-33 with the same depressing results.
-
- I use to have a Seagate ST1144A 120 meg, and got 1MEG/sec transfer
- rate (in the 386), so I know the computers are not the bottleneck.
-
- Well, there is nothing I can do about this. However, I am planning
- on buying another HD. I would like to put most of my stuff on the
- new drive, including possibly being able to boot from the new HD.
- However, I have no tape backup. So, I cant backup the old drive,
- pop in the new one, restore the backup to the new HD, and reformat
- the old HD.
-
- I am open to suggestions as to which route to take...
-
- IDE, ESDI, or SCSI.
-
- I am concerned about IDE. If I get another IDE, this Seagate might
- affect it, and I may get the same terrible performance as with my
- Seagate. (Could this happen? -- Could the one IDE drive's performance
- (electrical, not mechanical) interfere with another IDE, especially
- since the Seagate would be the Master)
-
- ESDI and SCSI open up other problems (Drivers, complexity, etc)...
- But, I would be willing to go with them if anyone could convince
- me that it would aleviate my performance problems, and also allow
- me to set up the drive as the boot disk, without making me backup
- my old drive.
-
- I hope I made some sense... I am fairly competent, but I am unfamiliar
- with SCSI and ESDI drives.
-
- Any help is appreciated!
-
- Thanks!
