- This is your modem's "fault". If you have a Hayes compatible, try adding

- to the modem command string before dialing out. Most default to X4, which
- makes the modem wait for dial tone before dialing out. It also allows it
- to detect a busy signal. Anyway, it appears that either your phone company
- has a set of non-standard tones that the modem doesn't recognize as
- "dialtone", or the modem is goofy.

- If you set it to X0, that will make the modem "blind dial" (ignore dialtone
- and busy signal). It will only send "CONNECT" to your computer, though.
- If you need it to send something like "CONNECT 2400", try X1.
