- Dear net..
-
- We have one 720, one 835 and one Sun-3 sharing eachothers disks via NFS.
- The 720 has a DAT (with compression), which we want to use to backup all
- file systems on all machines in a single operation. The amount is about
- 1.2 Gb; 150000 files. I have the following experiences:
-
- - Running any backup program on the 720 will usually fail for the NFS
- mounted file systems, since root access is not allowed over NFS on the
- HPs (Sun can be configured to allow it).
-
- - Running fbackup on the 835 to remotely use the 720 DAT should be
- possible (although FASTSEARCH is not supported in this mode).
- However, in our case, fbackup never gets through building its inital
- tables (after 15 (!) hours of CPU time I gave up). Our patched
- fbackup has revision number 70.26.
-
- - datio does not support remote DAT access.
-
- It seems then that no simple solution exists to our backup problem. Do
- I have to sacrifice security by implementing a non-supported
- modification of the kernel (allowing NFS root access), or do I have to
- spend thousands of dollars to buy Omniback, just in order to be able to
- do a decent backup?
