- I recommend getting the Imake distribution from Univ of Liverpool
- that was recently announced here. I ftp'd that last weekend and got
- Imake up and running properly on my workstation in about an hour.
- One should also get the X11 libraries from HP Corvallis, Oregon since
- the supplied libraries are horribly incomplete.
-
- HP really has made me VERY VERY unhappy with their policy of not
- shipping all of the freely distributable X11 libraries and not
- shipping Imake and the config files. Rest assured that when I get
- asked for my personal opinion, I make it very clear that I believe
- that HP is really shafting its customers. Note that DEC and SUN
- supply a fairly complete set of X11 libraries and tools, including
- Imake. I haven't used a stock RS/6000, so I'm not sure about IBM.
- Note also that despite the performance advantage of HP, I'd rather
- have a SUN because I really don't like being arbitrarily taken
- advantage of by HP in this manner and I really do want to be able to
- compile and use most of the freely distributable software on the net.
- SUN does a much better job of supporting that than HP does, and has
- more commercial applications as well.
