- You can set up most modems so that they handle auto-answer themselves,
- just tie the DTR line always high.

- I've not used 3100s (or Ultrix), but based on VAX/VMS experience, the problem
- with having only the data lines connected (and the tty port thus configured
- as a local, non-modem line), is that the system will not respond
- if the modem loses the connection, i.e. due to line noise, so anyone else
- dialling in on that line can pick up someone else's session. Its a security
- problem rather than a technical one. Barring root logins on such lines,
- and having some sort of idle-process killer might work if you don't
- have high-security requirements.
