  15.     I guess this is a toughie, but I'd prefer to see Open Systems Today
  16. propose a definition of "Open Systems" that we can all live with an
  17. that actually has some meaning *before* we engage in a jolly round of
  18. flamage about who is more "Open".

  31.     POSIX compliance:            Loads of things
  32. Is it?
  33.     UNIX:                    which? UNIX(R) is a trademark..
  34. Is it?
  35.     Runs on a huge range of platforms:    POSIX?
  36. Is it?
  37.     A marketing buzzword:            Ask "Open Systems Today"?
  38. Is it?
  39.     A checklist item for an RFP        Everything is "Open"

  43.     I've heard EVERY SINGLE ONE of those categories of "definitions"
  44. used, and not in fun. If you ask which vendor has the greatest commitment
  45. to the above, then you're an idiot or worse.

  47.     A survey question such as this makes me really wonder if the
  48. folks at "Open Systems Today" know what they're "Today" about. It is
  49. a given that any vendor's answer to "Who is most committed" is "MEMEME!!"
  50. It is a likelihood that any user's answer is going to be "whatever I like"
  51. because "Open" here is almost synoymous with "is good", it's such a
  52. broad brush. Just pretend it's an election year and you're asking a
  53. bunch of pols "Who is most *MORAL*?" - yep, you're gonna get a really
  54. meaningful response.

  57. head of a pin, or something that someone can say something intelligible
  58. about.

  63. I believe computers should have lots of nice ventilation holes in them, but
  64. not too many.
