- Due to my opinion, the discussions about ASV go intop the wrong direction:
- it's simply to expensive to upgrade a vanilla TT to ASV:
- (All prices that follow are german ones - citizen of other countries
- might have different experiance):
-
- You need for ASV:
-
- (1) ASV - comes on a 300 MB Fujitsu HD and coasts in Germany according
- to the statement of an Atari employee DM 3900 + VAT (i.e. 4450 DM)
- ASV is _not_ available on diskettes or tape at present.
-
- (2) a 19 " b/w monitor, if you want to have X-windows, coasts approx.
- DM 1700 in Germany.
-
- (3) MORE RAM - you need at least 8 MB ( more is better ), coasts you
- 500 DM for an empty third party TT-RAM module plus DM 50 / MB.
- So, for 8 MB TT-RAM you need additional DM 900.
-
- (4) A (cheapo) TT - coasts DM 2000 (2MB ST-RAM, no TT-RAM, no HD,
- no MONITOR).
-
- So, ASV in a working configuration coasts you approx DM 9000, the pure
- upgrade will be around 6000 DM. (if you sell your PTC for DM 500 and your
- Atari TT-RAM for additional 500 DM).
-
-
- THAT IS FAR TOO MUCH. If you want to do UNIX for as little as possible
- money, you'd better buy a second hand Sparcstation or SUN 3/60 or a
- NeXTstation or a fast PC and run linux (free) or one of the BSD-s
- on it. Personally I have decided to sell my TT and buy a used SPARC instead.
- This cut down the upgrade coasts from DM 6000 to DM 2500.
-
- Additionally, nobody knows whether there will be available sometimes
- UNIX drivers for tape drives, CD drives, trird party graphics cards and
- so on.
-
- The TT is a nice computer, but I would not recommand to run ASV on it.

- P.S. There have been NeXT stations for DM 6000 ....
