- -> It's cheap...
-
- And cheaper since the wreck of the US Dollar. Go and find a similar
- machine for such a low cost. Don't forget, the 'PC Clone' computers
- have reached their bottom price. They won't carry on the race because
- otherwise Taiwan factories would hurtle towards their doom.
- What about the memory price, also ?
-
- -> It'll run Spectre GCR I'm sure even if David Small has to hammer it into
- -> it so there's no problem with a software shortage...
-
- I guess it will. With the new 1.44 Mb drive, you have no need for GCR,
- you can read MAC HD disks directly.
-
- -> I'm a musician and that DSP is better than most samplers that cost
- -> twice as much and I can even play tetris with it...
-
- The sound quality is slightly better than CD sound. And I don't know
- of any low cost machine with a 16 bit dual 50 KHz DAC/ADC built-in,
- 32 megs DSP and private memory. With such stuff, it's easy to do
- speech synthesis, modem design, music processing, video computations
- and the like. E.g : A 2 times 10 band graphic equalizer does only
- require 50 % of CPU-DSP time at 50 kHz sampling rate...
-
- The video is not the top, okay. But still I like the 640x400 true
- color mode. Don't forget this is a game machine, not a workstation. Sure
- on PC's with 1-meg SVGA cards you can do better. But how many PC games
- actually run in high rez ? Not many. At least because of that : when you
- want many colors, you have to sacrifice rez... And the VGA cards are
- slow, slow... not very great for animations.
-
- -> As for serious computing, I laugh at anything under 10 MFLOPS but that
- -> Falcon will make one hell of a word processor/synthesizer/video game/
- -> terminal/graphics toy/Mathematica Machine.
-
- That's what it was designed for. And you can add extra power on the
- expansion socket. I am considering at the moment to plug in a 96002 DSP.
- That would be nice. You can also add cache RAM, or stuff like that...
-
- -> I wish the Falcon had a faster CPU, but I'm sure that will be possible...
- -> If commodore comes out with something better, then more power to
- -> them, and less money in my bank account... Apple or IBM release
- -> a truly cool computer? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
-
- There is more to come, more powerful... Still the CPU is not so bad, the
- ratings are really good when compared to the old 16 MHz TT.
- I suppose 486 PC machines are faster, in absolute. But they run such slow
- softwares that, in the end, this makes little difference. The new version of
- Windows will require, I believe, at least 8 Mb of memory... For what ? We do
- something very honest with the new GEM and its 512 Kb...
-
- But for the moment, I think Falcon has the greatest quality/price ratio of
- any machine on the market.
-
- Buy it or don't, that's a personnal choice... But I think many people will
- make up their mind quickly.
