  13. We have recently bought a couple of 425e's. Seeing HP's prices for things
  14. like disks and memory, we decided to purchase 'minimum-configuration'
  15. machines, with the idea of adding third-party bits-and-pieces.

  17. I am having some trouble creating a disked 425e. I can easily plug in the
  18. disk: the power supply cables are in place, the SCSI connector is there.
  19. (The SCSI cable I used is a straight-through cable: connects pin 1 on one
  20. connector to pin 1 on the other, same as in a DN2500.) The problem is
  21. probably not one of terminators: the terminators are in place on the (only)
  22. disk drive; it does not matter whether I plug in or not a terminator at the
  23. back of the machine (into the external SCSI interface). The problem is
  24. unlikely to be the type of disk I used: I also tried a Rodime drive (which
  25. is a spare for a DN2500).

  27. At the power-on (ROM) self test, the node displays

  37. If I use 'DI N' and then 'TE' at the MD prompt, then it will also run the
  38. loadable self test, at the end of which it will display

  44. The disk used is jumpered to be SCSI ID 6 (and this last message does not
  45. change if I re-jumper the drive to ID 5).

  47. The node will not run: after 'DI N', 'EX anything' it will show the dots
  48. while loading, then the line 'low high start', and then it just hangs.

  50. I thought this might be caused by some jumper or setting on the 425e. But I
  51. cannot see any jumpers that could be changed. (There are some jumpers next
  52. to the ethernet connectors, but they are supposed to be the selector between
  53. thick and thin ethernet. Also there are two DIP switches, but they must be
  54. related to video mode selection: one switch is labelled 'C' and 'G' (color
  55. or grayscale), the other '72' and '60' (Hertz).)

  57. The 'CF' 'I/O Configuration', 'SCSI' command shows (correct?) default
  58. values:
  59.    Select Code      14
  60.    Interrupt Level   4
  61.    Parity            Y
  62.    Bus Address       7
  63. (The LAN SelectCode and InterruptLevel are 21 and 5, the HP Parallel ones
  64. are 12 and 3).
