- Hang on.... Colder air is more dense, so the air mass you move per fan
- rotation is greater at lower temperatures. The cooling effect of air
- is related to the mass-velocity of the air. Therefore it *is* more
- efficient in terms of the fan to blow cooling air into the machine.
-
- Now for my input;
-
- I don't think it matters much which direction the air travels.
- Just as long as there is no still air inside to allow heat to buildup
- around certain chips (68030, 68040, etc) then it'll be ok.
- Yes the Power supply generates the most heat so you would want air to
- exit the case through it, but I don't think it contributes significantly,
- at least in the case of the desk-top PC. A filter for dust would be nice
- but I can't see justifying it when I open up a 2-3 yr old system and see
- some dust here and there. What will the dust hurt? maybe the floppies, but
- you should be cleaning them periodically (for oxide buildup) anyway.
- The only significant reason I would mount a fan to blow air out of
- the case rather than suck in is because the fan is easily blocked in
- suck mode. At least blowing out resists blockage. I am sure we all
- have little scraps of paper and post-it's lying around the computer.
- Just wait for a few to fall behind the computer. Anyway that's my 2
- cents. I use the new flame-retardant message handler these days.
