- I have a Quantum 240 Meg hard drive in a GVP Series II controller that
- has started acting flakey on me.
-
- The problem seems simple enough... every once in awhile, the motor
- simply stops spinning... to usually start again a few seconds later
- (though it has stayed off for much longer periods from time to
- time...) I suspect that there is an intermittent connection to the
- motor of the hard drive that is causing problems.
-
- I know that the problem is in the Quantum drive and not the GVP SCSI
- controller or anything, since I have unplugged the drive from
- everything other than the 4-wire power cable. (including the SCSI
- input to the drive as well as unplugging the whole unit from my A500).
- The problem still persists.
-
- I am wondering if anyone has had similar problems in the past.
- Sometimes it will work for hours with no problems, and then suddenly
- have palpatations. The drive is still, theoretically under warranty,
- but I was told by one repair center here that since it was bought in
- the US, it would have to be returned to the US for warranty repair
- work. I'm not particularly fond of paying UPS a fortune to ship it
- for me and wait 10 weeks for it to get repaired when the problem seems
- as simple as a loose connection somewhere. And to get it repaired
- without a warranty here (I'm in Canada, by the way) will cost me about
- $225 plus labor (supposedly they would have to replace the motor
- rather than try and find the problem with it...).
-
- I am, after all, an Electrical Engineering student, so I know which
- end of a soldering iron to hold, but am reluctant to break open the
- warranty seals on the drive at this point. Unfortunately, every time
- I have it open for testing, it works flawlessly so I haven't been able
- to yet determine the problem.
-
- If anyone has had a similar problem with a Quantum drive, I'd
- appreciate hearing about it so I could possibly be pointed in the
- right direction towards fixing it. Thanks a lot!
