  10. There was no FAQ posting in August, and the "real" one for September
  11. will be delayed a couple of weeks (to mid or late September) due to
  12. start-of-term pressures on my time.  Also, anonymous FTP is
  13. temporarily unavailable at the archive site; if you want to retrieve
  14. any of the archive files, use the mail server mentioned below.

  16. Here is the partly-updated main FAQ file for September.  For the time
  17. being the part about anonymous FTP is a lie, and the updated-in-August
  18. files may not have made it to the archive host yet.

  38. Subject: comp.software-eng archives

  40. The following files are available via anonymous FTP from directory
  41. pub/software-eng on host ftp.qucis.queensu.ca (130.15.1.100).  Log in with
  42. user ID 'anonymous' and use your mailing address as the password. Each file
  43. has a header (in e-mail or news format) that credits the original collector.
  44. If you cannot use FTP, send mail to archive-server@qucis.queensu.ca containing
  45. a line of the form
  46.     send software-eng f1 f2 ...
  47. where f1, f2, and so on are the names of the files from this list; the mail
  48. server should respond within an hour or so plus mailing delays (which can
  49. themselves be substantial if you're not directly on the internet).  If you
  50. want to find out more about the archive server, send mail to the same address
  51. with a line containing the word 'help'; if you do this you can't also request
  52. files in the same message.  If your mailer has trouble with large files, use
  53. the 'size <bytes>' command to set a threshold, above which the server will
  54. split files into several messages.

  121. I have created a WAIS database that indexes the comp.software-eng archives.
  122. It's still experimental; I'm still playing with appropriate "file types" for
  123. the various files, so you get a subsection of a file in response to a query,
  124. instead of the whole giant file (at the moment only a few of the files are
  125. subdivided, and not always in a useful way). The .src file follows at the end
  126. of this message.

  128. The following is taken from the WAIS FAQ.txt file: WAIS is available via
  129. anonymous FTP from a variety of sources.  The main distributor is think.com,
  130. in the wais subdirectory.
  131.  a. a mac client?  
  132.   think.com:/wais/WAIStation0.62.hqx
  133.  b. a unix client?
  134.   a few UNIX based clients are available in the core distribution, which
  135.   can be found on think.com:
  136.   think.com:/wais/wais-8-b#.tar.Z, where # is the most recent version (4 at
  137.   this time).  This includes the server, and clients for X Windows, GNU
  138.   Emacs and a couple of simple shell-based clients.
  139.  c. a dos client?
  140.   The University of North Carolina has been a main developement site for
  141.   WAIS software.  Several DOS clients can be found in the FTP archives on
  142.   wais.oit.unc.edu.
  143.  d. a NeXT client?
  144.   A client for NeXT can be found in think.com:/wais/XXX
  145.  e. a VMS client?
  146.   WAIS has been ported to VMS by the folks at the University of North
  147.   Carolina.

  149.   An example WAIS server is part of the core distribution.
