- My department is receiving a number of requests for SLIP access from
- our engineers and I've been testing our configuration to see if we have
- one that is supportable. So far, I'm not encouraged and certainly
- won't release it for use as my group will be swamped with support calls
- and upset users. Here's the my configuration and the problem:
-
- I'm running on a 386/33 connected to a UDS V.3229L modem (V.32) with a
- dial-up connection to the rack mount version of this UDS modem
- connected to a Xyplex terminal server. I'm using SLIP8250 version .6
- and the Clarkson telnet package CUTE 2.2D/TC-D. I'm running at 19200
- to the modem, with the -h option, and using a buffer size of 0x4000
- (16K).
-
- I can initiate a SLIP connection with no problem and can get reasonable
- response. The problem is that my system will hang at least once an
- hour. This evening, it has hung three times in less than two hours of
- usage. Typically, the hangs occur while using programs which do significant
- screen updates such as elm, more, or vi, although I've had an ls listing
- do it to me.
-
- I've tried a number of things to isolate the problem. I've used kermit
- extensively, both for interactive and file transfer purposes. It has
- never hung and I get exceptionally good transfer rates and no errors.
- I borrowed a copy of FTP Software's telnet (which was wasn't installed
- anywhere, just for the record) from a friend and tried it in place of
- CUTE. Although the hangs are of different type, they still occur. This
- leads me to suspect the SLIP packet driver since it is the only piece
- common to both configurations which have the problem and is not found in
- the one (kermit) which doesn't hang. I've tried with and without the
- -h option on SLIP8250, and I've tried buffers up to 32K.
-
- So. my questions are:
-
- 1) Has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so, is there a solution?
- 2) Is version .6 the current version of SLIP8250? If not, what is the
- current one?
- 3) Is 2.2D/TC-D the current version of CUTE?
- 4) What other steps could I take to isolate the problem?
-
- My thanks in advance. I haven't had regular access to the net for a
- while and I apologize in advance for any duplication should this be a topic
- already beaten senseless.
