  15. I have the need to implement a protocol which will function much like
  16. NFS.  I've read version 2 of the NFS protocol specification, and I
  17. understand that it's the version that everyone uses.  I know version 3
  18. exists, and I'm working on getting my hands on a copy of that
  19. specification.
  20.  
  21. But, before I start, I'd like to solicit opinions from the net.  I'm
  22. willing to summarize for the net if there is wide-spread interest
  23. (otherwise I could e-mail a summary to anyone who would be interested).
  24. I'm especially interested in opinions from people who have had an
  25. opportunity to implement all or part of the NFS protocol.
  26. Specifically, I would like to know:

  28. 1>  What would you do to improve the protocol?  Forgetting all about
  29.     backwards compatibility, would there be any specific functions that
  30.     you would add/remove/modify?  How about the arguments used by the
  31.     protocol?
  32.  
  33. 2>  What were the major problem areas you encountered in implementing
  34.     the protocol?
  35.  
  36. 3>  Are there any papers or other such documentation on this subject?
  37.  
  38. I have my own ideas on #1, but I'd like to hear what others have to
  39. say, so I can avoid needless mistakes.  Thanks in advance for your time.
