- Los Alamos Computational Science Workshop
- Call For Participants
- Spring 1993 Session
-
-
-
- The Advanced Computing Laboratory at Los Alamos National Laboratory invites
- scientists and engineers to participate in the spring session of the 1993
- Los Alamos Computational Science Workshop. The Workshop provides an enriched
- environment that allows professionals to explore the application of high
- performance computing to current scientific problems.
-
- Los Alamos National Laboratory offers a research environment designed to
- foster high performance computing methodologies and innovative multi-
- disciplinary collaborations. Los Alamos has always been a leader in high
- performance computing; many of the nation's scientific "grand challenge"
- problems -- fundamental problems with broad economic and scientific
- impact -- are being addressed by researchers at the Laboratory.
- Collaboration between participants and these scientists is encouraged
- through the Workshop's seminar series and a mentorship program, as well
- as through the Laboratory's numerous technical colloquia.
-
- The Workshop will offer participants three levels of participation
- ranging from an intensive one week overview, starting February 22, to a
- full twelve weeks of extended research and professional development.
- The centerpiece of the Workshop is a seminar series on high performance
- computational methods, environments and tools. The series will begin with
- a one week intensive overview presenting the technologies, the methodologies
- and the applications of high performance computing. Emphasis will be placed
- on enabling participants to effectively pursue their specific areas of
- interest through applied research and collaboration.
-
- Specific topics that will be addressed will include:
-
- * Advanced Architectures * Distributed Computing
- * Scientific Visualization * Parallel Numerical Methodologies
- * Performance Analysis and Optimization
- * "Grand Challenge" Applications
-
- Following this initial overview, participants will continue the study of
- high performance architectures with a two week hands-on tutorial focusing
- on high performance computing platforms from Cray Research, Inc. and
- Thinking Machines Corp. Enrollment in the hands-on tutorial is limited.
-
- Fifteen researchers will be able to remain at the Laboratory for up to nine
- additional weeks to further their own research and attend additional
- Workshop seminars. The extended seminars will provide detailed
- descriptions of innovative architectures, highlight selected visualization
- tools such as AVS and Khoros, contrast several language paradigms, and
- provide in-depth coverage of debugging, optimizing, and executing parallel
- codes on specific parallel architectures. This seminar series constitutes
- a significant time commitment. Thus high motivation, self discipline and
- initiative are critical for a participant to obtain benefit from the
- extended program at the Workshop.
-
- The Workshop offers an excellent computing environment. Through the
- Advanced Computing Laboratory, participants will have access to high
- performance workstations and innovative computer architectures including
- leading technologies from Thinking Machines, Intel, IBM, Cray, SGI, and
- Motorola.
-
- Prerequisites are:
- * FORTRAN or C programming experience or coursework
- * familiarity with UNIX
- * a strong foundation in physical or engineering sciences
-
- Application Process:
-
- In addition to completing the attached application, the process requires
- a short statement of research interests. Three letters of reference and
- a curriculum vitae are required. Students should include current transcripts.
-
- INCOMPLETE APPLICATION PACKAGES WILL NOT BE PROCESSED.
-
- Participants will be selected from industry, academia and government.
- Participation in the one-week intensive seminar is limited to 50 participants.
- The two week hands-on tutorial is open to 24 of the original 50 participants.
- Finally, 15 participants will be invited to continue their involvement
- through the extended workshop which will run for an additional nine weeks.
- Researchers remaining for the extended workshop will be afforded time and
- resources to dedicate to research and computing activities.
-
- There are no tuition fees associated with the workshop or the workshop
- facilities.
