  10. I'm experiencing enough "HD-Timeout/HD-controller reset" messages to
  11. have become frustrated (irritated?) with it. This occurs both with
  12. the MCC release (.97p2) and the SLS release (.96c I believe). The
  13. SLS kernel has the "static int reset = 0" code in it. (I built a new
  14. kernel just for kicks. And The problem occurred BEFORE and after I
  15. built the kernel.  ;-) ) The problem doesn't appear to happen when I
  16. crank the clock back from 33MHz to 10Mhz.  Needless to say, that's
  17. not an acceptable solution.

  19. These messages occur mainly when I start emacs the first time, or
  20. start X windows. They also occur when I'm in X doing stuff (mundane
  21. stuff).

  23. My hardware is a 386@33, no 387; a Technology Power Sonic-386
  24. motherboard (with 8 Meg RAM), a Kouwei KW-556A controller (multi-I/O
  25. card), a Quantum LPS-105 (master) and a Maxtor 7213 (slave), a
  26. Diamond Speedstar Plus (1Meg), and a Zoom VFP-32bis modem. The
  27. Quantum is dedicted to DOS, the Maxtor to Linux. At the moment I'm
  28. using SLS with a 32 MB root(/), a 64 MB /usr, a 43 MB swap
  29. partition, and another 64 MB partition for experimentation.

  31. I'm still in the experimental stages with Linux; trying to decide on
  32. a configuration, base level of software, disk partitioning, etc. So
  33. it's no big deal for me to scrap my current setup to try some
  34. experiments if anyone has any ideas. I'm thinking about setting up
  35. the MCC dist again and adding extended fs to see how that goes. (With
  36. an eye towards getting X11 up on that base.)
