- Here's my situation: I have installed the full SLS distribution onto the
- second partition of my first IDE hard drive. I believe this version to be
- rev 0.96c_pl2. I'd like to be able to boot either DOS 5.0 (which resides on
- the first partition of my first drive) or Linux.
-
- I have the binaries for lilo version 4, and the source for lilo version 5
- (BTW, the v5 source failed compilation with a simple "make" -- I didn't really
- look to hard at it after that.) After a "make install" to put the executable
- v4 where it wanted to be, I tried one of the test setups in the README -- boot
- from a floppy with the image and root fs on the hard drive (the second of the
- two example setups, I think). Lilo refused to write anything to the disk,
- complaining (I think) that it didn't recognize the boot record. I tried disks
- formatted under DOS (both bootable and non-bootable), and using fdformat (as
- well as fdformat --> mformat).
-
- Since I couldn't test the program in a "safe" way, I'm unwilling to let it
- overwrite my MBR, so I guess my questions break down in the following way:
-
- 1. Should I even be trying to use lilo with this version of Linux? (The
- README says 0.96c_pl1 or better, but...)
-
- 2. If I can use lilo, I'd appreciate someone amplifying the instructions in
- the README for me. There was a mention in an earlier article of an excellent
- posting containing lilo instructions. I either missed it, or wasn't actually
- running Linux at the time, so a repost or mailing of the text would be great.
-
- 3. If I CAN'T (or shouldn't) use lilo, then I'd appreciate some advice on
- whether to try shoelace or the pfdisk-->BOOTACTV route.
-
- Once again, thanks in advance!!
