- In the last 24 hours, I have experienced two system lockups. The first time
- it seemed to be due to one uucico (running about 5 hours) running into
- another uucico (just starting and trying to talk to the same system -- I
- thought that the lock files were supposed to prevent this). This one just
- trashed my news spool, thankfully isolated on one partition, and caused me
- (and my feeds) to lose about 12 hours of news.
-
- The second lockup occurred just five minutes ago under a heavy system load
- -- I was running uucico, Cnews's newsrun, a file transfer under minicom,
- elm, and two makes (no I don't enjoy the torture test, I just get bored
- waiting for something to get finished and since it is so easy to do
- something else under X11, I go and do it :-). This time no partition was
- corrupted except that efsck on /dev/hdb1 reports an incorrect free zone
- count and refuses to fix it. Since it's only off by three blocks, I'm not
- going to worry about it unless it causes additional problems.
-
- The question is, does anyone know why these lockups, especially the second
- one, are occurring and what can be done to stop them? Please don't tell me
- not to run so many applications at once -- I already figured that one out --
- but is there any way to figure out a way to prevent them from happening?
- I will be upgrading to 0.97.4 this weekend, maybe tonight, and hope that
- this will clear up some of the problems, but until I get a full backup made
- (about 80 MB worth, I figure that's about six hours work) I feel like I'm
- living on the edge.
-
- Thanks,
-
- Bill
