  37. The following program will be broadcast on many PBS stations in October. 
  38. Please check with your local PBS station Education Services Director to see

  41. TELECOMMUNICATIONS: BRINGING THE WORLD INTO THE CLASSROOM, a professional 
  42. development videoconference for educators and school boards will be 
  43. presented on October 22, 1992, from 2:00-4:00 PM Eastern Time by the 
  44. National School Boards Association's Institute for the Transfer of 
  45. Technology to Education, the PBS Elementary/Secondary Service and The 
  46. National Foundation for the Improvement of Education.  The videoconference 
  47. will originate from INFOMART, Dallas, TX, site of the annual "Making 
  48. Schools More Productive" NSBA conference.  This live, interactive 
  49. videoconference will investigate issues in telecommunications use in 
  50. schools from a variety of perspectives-- from policymaker to practitioner.
  51.  
  52. The videoconference will feature NFIE's 1992 award-winning Christa 
  53. McAuliffe Educators -- Bonnie Bracey, Arlington, VA; Misty Brave, Kyle, SD; 
  54. Carol Gilkinson, Covina, CA; Marilyn Schlief, Garden City, MI; Jim 
  55. Zimmerman, Urbana, IL -- who employ some of the most innovative 
  56. applications of technology in schools today, such as:
  57.  
  58. *Connecting Students from Around the Globe Via Lumaphones and 
  59. slow-Scan-Video: Voice and picture messages are carried over telephone 
  60. lines from Michigan to Japan connecting students and teachers in the Garden 
  61. City Public Schools with their Japanese contemporaries.
  62.  
  63. *Teaching About Cultures Close to Home: Technology is being integrated into 
  64. multicultural curriculum programs in Little Wound School in South Dakota to 
  65. educate and instill value of traditional native American customs.
  66.  
  67. *Achieving Real Life Studies of Our Earth: Students in Arlington, Virginia 
  68. are taking part in the National Geographic Kids Network to share current 
  69. information in an international telecommunications-based science and 
  70. geography curriculum studying acid rain.
  71.  
  72. *Opening Up the World of Science: Students are utilizing a variety of  
  73. technological tools including computers, video disc, scanners, 
  74. telecommunications, and robotics to complete classroom assignments and 
  75. discover the world of science.

  77. *Creating a Global Perspective, Community, and  Classroom: Students in 
  78. Covina, California are being introduced to Prodigy and E-mail and other  
  79. educational technology to engage students in collaborative efforts to 
  80. examine worldwide problems, increase cultural awareness, and promote a 
  81. global perspective.

  83. By offering this videoconference, educators in your area will learn how 
  84. (and be able to ask questions of) these motivated, innovative teachers are 
  85. applying telecommunications-based programs in new and exciting ways. Their 
  86. insights and experiences will prove invaluable to educators who are 
  87. striving to change education.

  100. DESCRIPTION    :   The videoconference will examine issues in 
  101.                     telecommunications use in schools from a variety of 
  102.                     perspectives - from policymaker to practitioner.  The 
  103.                     1992 NFIE Christa McAuliffe Educators will demonstrate 
  104.                     projects currently in place in their respective 
  105.                     districts and help participants explore the challenges 
  106.                     and opportunities presented in implementing 
  107.                     telecommunications-based programs in today's 
  108.                     classrooms.  Telecommunications issues for schools, 
  109.                     including planning and policy issues, governance, 
  110.                     curricular issues, technical requirements, and 
  111.                     financial impact will be addressed.

  113.                 Association's Institute for the Transfer of 
  114.                 Technology to Education, with support from 
  115.                 the Regional Bell Operating Companies

  120.                 non-exclusive offering.

  130. HOW TO ACCESS THIS PROGRAM

  133. Step 1:  Contact your local PBS station Education Services director to 
  134. find out if this program will be available through your local station.
  135.  
  136. Step 2:  If this program is unavailable through your PBS station, your 
  137. organization may license it for C-band downlink.  Simply mark "NSBA 
  138. Videoconference Event" on the Interest Form Below to obtain more 
  139. information, including a registration form.  The program may be licensed 
  140. for $150 per downlink site, including recording and site duplication 
  141. rights for one year from the date of broadcast plus a guidebook which may 
  142. be reproduced.  Copies of the program may be retained for the 
  143. life-of-tape!  The broadcast will occur on regular C-band satellite.

  145. Cooperative arrangements with your local PBS station are encouraged! 
  146. Cooperating with a nearby educational organization is one way to share 
  147. costs.  The PBS Elementary/Secondary Service maintains an active roster 
  148. of all parties interested in licensing this program and will gladly help
