  19. First Ward/Christensen, derived from that X-Modem, then Y-Modem, then
  20. Z-Modem by Chuck Forsberg. Also see the docu to these protocols for a
  21. historical overview.

  23. Ward/Christensen and early X-Modem had checksums, thne nowadays used X-Modem
  24. does it with CRC-16 (one very close to the CCITT CRC term), Y-Modem also
  25. (though I don't remember if the term is different), Z-Modem has the option
  26. of CRC-32 (though I don't believe it's really needed).

  30. X and Y do not. I am not sure about kermit 5.x ... it performs super compared
  31. to Z-Modem, but I don't know if it can continue transfers. Anyone enlighten
  32. me on this?

  35. P.S.: Ah yes, Z-Modem got on-the-fly compression and such features in later
  36. versions, though I don't have a docu to an up-to-date implementation
  37. (sigh). And Z-Modem has major problems with modern modems that have their
  38. own buffer (usually about 8k) when errors occur ... it get's confused that
  39. data is still coming in despite the ZRPOS. Kermit 5.x does not have this
  40. problem, it retrains much faster than Z-Modem.
