- | Last week I posed the following question to the net: what's the best
- | available modem for UUCP bulk transfers in the $700-$800 range?
- | [ ... ]
- |
- | Here are their replies:
- | [ ... ]
- |
- | The Telebit WorldBlazer. You'll get around 2KB/sec on uucp transfers
- | of compressed data with TurboPEP....
- | [ ... ]
- |
- | A Telebit Worldblazer is the fastest - provided the other side has
- | one, too. It also has V.32bis and V.32, making it compatible
- | with most modems.
- | [ ... ]
- |
- | I have two Telebit WOrldBlazers and have measured approximate rates of
- | 1600cps for v.32bis and 1800+cps for TurboPEP. If you are looking for
- | the absolute fastest uucp modem, the WorldBlazer is the way to go.
- | [ ... ]
- |
- | The best would be a Telebit WorldBlazer since it can run v.42bis over
- | Turbo-PEP. Probable transfer rates of about 2000cps before any compression
- | that v.42bis can do.

- I would like to add my 2 cents worth on the whole speed question.
- I think some statements can be very misleading as I was to discover
- very recently.
-
- The site from which I receive about 40 MB of new per day recently
- switched from one transport to another. I was very excited because
- my transfer rates went from an average of 1500 bps to 2500 bps.
- Then, I noticed that I went from receiving my usual daily average
- to over 80 MB of news! After inquiring, it was discovered that
- compressing the news batches had ceased with installation of their
- new transport and they would correct this to again begin sending
- compressed news batches. I went down to my original stat averages.
-
- The site to which I connect can only use V.32bis protocol (I forgot
- the brand name of the modems, but it's a University) so, when I con-
- nect, "38400/LAPM/COMP/14400" is returned, which is simple that I am
- calling on a 38400 baud port requesting LAPM and V.42bis data com-
- pression and that my site is connecting at 14400 baud.
-
- It didn't take too long for me to take my calculator and figure out
- that sending uncompressed newsbatches at 2500 bps actually took long-
- er to transmit than sending compressed newsbatches (approx 50%) at
- 1500 bps.
-
- As I said, this is using a WorldBlazer with LA5.01 proms using V.32bis
- protocol dialing in on an ordinary telephone line. When I am called
- requesting 'EPEP' protocol, sending comprerssed news batches, my aver-
- age speed in sending is 1400 bps over a Long Distance circuit (in the
- case of this one site).
-
- All the above is using 'Taylor UUCP' package with a window size of 7
- and a packet size of 64.
