- Last week I posed the following question to the net: what's the best
- available modem for UUCP bulk transfers in the $700-$800 range?
- I would like to thank the ff people for responding: Jeff Wasilko,
- Larry Snyder, John Temples, Paul Walker, Dean Roth, Jerry Wallace,
- Jim Prescott and Rene Madsen.
-
- Here are their replies:

-
- the tb3000 doesn't do PEP, so I'd look at the worldblazer (which is
- the 3000 + superpep).
-
- Most unix people doing UUCP use telebit modems in UUCP spoofing mode....

- The WB is the obvious selection if you need PEP support, but
- if you don't care about PEP support, I would strongly suggest
- another v.32bis modem with better latency and throughput.

- The Telebit WorldBlazer. You'll get around 2KB/sec on uucp transfers
- of compressed data with TurboPEP, assuming the computers on both end
- can keep up with the modems. You should be able to get one for around
- $700.

-
- I believe that the Worldblazer would be a better choice than the T3000.
- The WB capabilities are a superset of the T3000, and the WB supports
- 'TurboPep', which can move data faster than v.32bis if the following
- conditions apply:
-
- The other end of the line has a modem that supports TurboPep.
- The modems have negotiated g protocol 'spoofing'.
-
- The TurboPep (and Pep) modulations are half duplex, so they perform poorly
- without the spoofing. It is my understanding that TurboPep (and Pep) degrade
- much more gracefully than v.32bis (i.e. on a noisy line).
-
- I have a WB, and I'm happy with it. Its not perfect, but it does the job.

- I've been in the same situation for a while, and everyone points
- me to the TB WorldBlazer.

-
- It depends on what the other side of the connection has.
-
- A Telebit Worldblazer is the fastest - provided the other side has
- one, too. It also has V.32bis and V.32, making it compatible
- with most modems.
-
- V.32bis works fine, too. But if the other side only has Telebit PEP
- modems, then you need PEP and in that case I recommend the Worldblazer.
- For V.32bis, try Intel. Practical Peripheral and Supra are cheaper,
- but have some firmware bugs to clean up yet.

-
- I have two Telebit WOrldBlazers and have measured approximate rates of
- 1600cps for v.32bis and 1800+cps for TurboPEP. If you are looking for
- the absolute fastest uucp modem, the WorldBlazer is the way to go. I
- was looking thru the Open Systems Today I just received and saw UUNet
- is selling them for under US$800.
-
- BTW, Telebit has anounced FAX capability at some point.

-
- The best would be a Telebit WorldBlazer since it can run v.42bis over
- Turbo-PEP. Probable transfer rates of about 2000cps before any compression
- that v.42bis can do. It may also be slighty on the high side of your
- price range (list ~$1000, dunno about retail price).
-
- A T3000 is just a very expensive v.32bis/v.42bis modem. There are several
- similar modems in the just under $300 range. Figure around 1400cps before
- compression.
