- Hello, everybody!
-
- Just as everybody else seems to have done <grin> I downloaded the new
- versions of zip and unzip (from garbo.uwasa.fi) and compiled them.
- First, let me express my gratitude to the people from the Info-ZIP
- group. Thanks guys! You have done a great job!
-
- However, I encountered some minor problems. Here they are; most of
- them seem trivial to be fixed.
-
- 1) There is some inconsistency in the file naming in the two archives.
- The files in the unzip50.zip archive all have lowercase-only names,
- while the files in zip19p1.zip have mixed-case names. It seems that
- the two archives have been created by two different people. At first I
- even thought that the first archive has been re-packaged under
- MS-DOS... Would be nice if at least the text files that have one and
- the same contents in the two archives have also one and the same name.
-
- 2) The file names in the Mac and VMS directories do not conform to the
- ZipRules.
-
- 3) The makefiles are also not consistent between the two archives. For
- instance, one of the makefiles supports the "list" tag, while the
- other doesn't.
-
- 4) What happened with the program ship? Why its disappearance is not
- properly documented? (I was able to find just two lines mentioning
- that it is no longer in the archive and is distributed separately.
- Those two lines were buried deep in the history file.) So where's
- ship? Is there a new version of it? A version that would support
- different encoding schemes (e.g., xxencode) would be nice...
-
- 5) The most important of all. Can I create archives that are
- compatible with PKZIP 1.10 or with the old zip? I.e., is there an
- option to disable the deflation method? I would like to be able to
- create compatible archives - when I have to send them to people who
- don't have the new zip/unzip yet. (Yes, I know, they should get it,
- but many of them don't have it yet.) I certainly don't want to keep
- two versions of zip just for compatibility reasons... An option to
- disable the new compression method seems very useful to me...
-
- Regards,
- Vesselin
