  31.                   Toward a Truly Global Network

  33. Computer-mediated communication networks are growing rapidly, yet
  34. they are not truly global -- they are concentrated in affluent
  35. parts of North America, Western Europe, and parts of Asia.
  36.  
  37. GNET is an archive/journal for documents pertaining to the effort
  38. to bring the net to lesser-developed nations and the poorer parts
  39. of developed nations.  (Net access is better in many "third
  40. world" schools than in South-Central Los Angeles).  GNET consists
  41. of two parts, an archive directory and a moderated discussion.

  43. Archived documents are available by anonymous ftp from the
  44. directory global_net at dhvx20.csudh.edu (155.135.1.1).  To
  45. conserve bandwidth, the archive contains an abstract of each
  46. document, as well as the full document.  (Those without ftp
  47. access can contact me for instructions on mail-based retrieval).

  49. In addition to the archive, there is a moderated GNET discussion
  50. list.  The list is limited to discussion of the documents in the
  51. archive.  It is hoped that document authors will follow this
  52. discussion, and update their documents accordingly.  If this
  53. happens, the archive will become a dynamic journal.  Monthly
  54. mailings will list new papers added to the archive.

  56. We wish broad participation, with papers from nuts-and-bolts to
  57. visionary.  Suitable topics include, but are not restricted to:

  60.    host and user hardware and software
  61.    connection options and protocols
  62.    current and proposed applications

  64.    user and system administrator training
  65.    social, political or spriritual impact

  69.    directories of people and resources
