- Ronan Conroy and others have indicated that summation may produce
- "double weighting" in the form of giving a subject 2 points for
- agreeing with the same symptom (or other statement) that is
- represented by two differently worded items. If subjects are
- truly responding to the items as though they are the same, then the
- item intercorrelation will be 1.00 and the researcher would know
- (should know) to eliminate one of the redundant items.

- Essentially, all I'm arguing in this exchange is that anyone who
- employs multiple items that may be related subject those items to
- preliminary analyses to determine the extent to which they represent
- (from the viewpoint of the respondents) a unidimensional concept.
