  12. I am still a supporter of Ibid.; I have at least 5 different
  13. databases on my disk, for general items ("default bibliography"),
  14. all the books in my office, all the books in the small Porter
  15. Inst. library (about 4000), all the offprints in my office,
  16. articles in PTL and PT... It all has worked reasonably well.
  17. It has been extremely helpful with a number of dissertations, too.
  18. It also works for Hebrew items under certain constraints (bibl.
  19. producible by manual template only). In short, I wonder why
  20. people have not been able to work with it satisfactorily.

  22. As for selecting items from a database, of course it's a terrible
  23. job if done manually. It is better to use Ibid itself for selecting
  24. only those records you need, create a set, then produce a file
  25. in Ibid format (via the "File" option, when generating a bibliography).
  26. All that's needed then is adding ASCII 250 (the small dot
  27. you see at the end of the fields; ALT-spacebar on NB standard keyboard)
  28. using the CI command (ci ¢enter¢ascii 250 enter¢, then eliminating this
  29. sign after <PG> (in the expanded mode). This can be done fairly quickly
  30. even for 3000 items. Alternatively use the select.run XPL macro,
  31. or write one to delete a complete record with the cursor anywhere
  32. on any field in that record.

  34. Of course Ibid is not perfect, and it gets at times erratic, but
  35. I could almost always trace the source of trouble, like a print
  36. mode in front of a filed, etc. (most of the troubles discussed over again
  37. on this list).
