  13. Is NB 4.0 slower than 3.1?

  15. NB 4.0 loads NBLINGUA.FNT. If you work with HGC+, this means
  16. that when you shell to DOS, this file must be UNloaded to make
  17. the display possible (it was impossible to work with NB textbase
  18. if you worked in 48k ramfont mode with HGC+). The same principle
  19. applies to VGA, although the structure of NBLINGUA.FNT is
  20. different (I presume). This must take an extra second.
  21. (By the way, if you worked in multilingual environment in 3.1,
  22. you had to shell to DOS via HELP, because only then you
  23. would get the right display). The flushes you see are the
  24. traces of this loading and unloading process. When the fonts
  25. are loaded, different display parameters must be loaded, too;
  26. during the interval between fonts loading and parameters loading,
  27. you can see incorrect display (this is not a new phenomenon;
  28. you can find detailed explanations in my docs on HGC+ in
  29. NB-HGC01.ZIP).

  31. In addition, all accented letters in NB 4.0 are now (at least in
  32. the multilingual, lingua version) 3 bytes combinations.
  33. This is what has displeased me most about this version, but my criticism
  34. has been rejected. I am sure that 3 bytes combinations (which
  35. certainly make NB files no longer 100% pure ASCII) delay
  36. scrolling etc., since they augment the volume (size) of the
  37. handled file. I cannot evaluate if this is the case with the
  38. final version, because I haven't yet got one.

  40. It is not implausible that the complex structure of NB 4.0
  41. (editor -- several overlays -- display regulator -- HELP file
  42. [a tremendous file indeed]) also causes delays.
