- Paul Bodin kindly reminds me of the fact that (of course) NB is a text
- editor and not a graphics editor (like Ami Pro, etc.): sorry that my
- question seemed to imply that. I was referring to the possibility of
- switching between several "Symbol sets", one with italics on screen
- (which is hardly pure text mode I suppose) and 8 colors instead of 16,
- and the fact that --unlike in NB3-- when one switches out to DOS and
- comes back, one sees the fast message "resetting video..." flashing
- by, which also seems to suggest that some special "video" operation
- is going on (which may have nothing to do with graphics --about which
- I don't anything).
-
- My only point is however: Is the new NB4 simply slower in text editing
- itself, as one may see by doing e.g. simple typing, scrolling, etc. I
- notice a marked difference on a 386 20 MH machine, and wondered whether
- the larger program, different coding, different overlay structures, or
- whatever other new goodies we now have, have made NB4 slower than NB3,
- which would be a serious price to pay, since one of the major advantages
- of NB over its competitors is its speed. Question: did anyone do some
- objective "measuring" of NB speeds for some major operations? I have
- noticed the difference most notably when typing up text and when arriving
- at the bottom of the screen, when the text above must "move up": this
- is very sluggish. Maybe all this is because I have tinkered so much
- with NB.HLP, NBCUSTOM.SET, printer files, etc., that I have made a
- mistake somewhere which slows down the system. However, my experience
- is that if you make mistakes things don't work at all, or erratically,
- and do not simply slow down. So, I would very much welcome some testing
- of various operations by other NB4 users. Thanks a lot.
